Milton Rotary Gives Away $21,000 in just one night
Rotarian Blanche Hinton is joined by a Milton elementary school principal as she discusses Rotary's program that gives dictionaries to 1,500 Grade 3 students.
(Milton, Ont.: 21 May 2014) – Milton Rotary Club gave away $21,000 in just one night to local Milton and global charities on May 26 at its annual awards night.
Dozens of guests attended the annual awards night held at the Milton Sports Centre's banquet hall. All of the money was raised by Milton Rotarians through fundraisers in 2013 and 2014, with no administration costs whatsoever.
The Rotary Club crowned its first prestigious Milton Youth Citizen of the Year Award, part of $7,000 being given to Milton high school students recognized for outstanding volunteerism, leadership and financial need through the club’s new scholarships and bursary programs.

Milton Rotary Gives Away $21,000 in just one night
The following financial awards and donations were made by The Rotary Club of Milton on May 26th:
STRIDE (Supported Training & Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments) – STRIDE representatives received a cheque for a quarter of the net proceeds of Milton Rotary’s annual spring gala. The money was raised in April 2014 from the Rotary Club of Milton's Diamonds & Denim dance at Country Heritage Park. STRIDE is a Milton organization supporting mental health clients’ employment needs.
2990 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps – A Milton Cadets representative Lt. Steve Semenchuk accepted a cheque to help young adults in the cadet program purchase tents.
The Deck – Oliver Clarke from The Deck, Milton’s youth drop-in centre, accepted a cheque to help Milton high school students at the centre.
$2,000 to Milton High School Students for Bursaries (Recipients were on hand) -
Bishop Reding – 2 x $250 – (Mike Ledwith Rotary Volunteer Award) School representative Sara Armstrong (head of math dept.) was on hand.
Craig Kielburger – 2 x $250 (Mike Ledwith Rotary Volunteer Award).
Milton District – 2 x $250 (Osler Music Award & Mike Ledwith Rotary Volunteer Award) - School representative will be on hand.
EC Drury School for the Deaf – $250 - School representative will be on hand.
Gary Allan High School – 2 x $125 – Rotary Achievement Award. School representative will be on hand.
$3,500 to High School Students for Milton Youth Citizen of the Year Awards (Recipients to be on hand) -
a. $2,000 x 1 recipient in attendance
b. $1,000 x 1 recipient in attendance
c. $500 x 1 recipient in attendance
Rotary International Youth Exchange – This year the Rotary Club of Milton will be financially supporting and facilitating an outbound Milton high school student to go to Sweden for onefull year. The student Brittney Carscadden was in attendance to receive an official send off. Our current in-bound student from Italy, Nicola Fioni, was also present.
The Milton Grade 3 Dictionary Program – Rotarian Blanche Hinton discussed this year's success of distributing a dictionary to promote literacy to every single public and Catholic elementary school Grade 3 student in Milton. This year approximately 1,500 students will receive a dictionary. Blanche to presented token dictionary to Evelyn Quist, Principal of Robert Baldwin School, on behalf of all Grade 3 students.
Milton Rotary Club President Rob Rubino presented a sizeable donation to Hajra Wilson, District Polio Plus Chairperson, for allocation to The Rotary Polio Plus Fund for the Eradication of Polio.
Milton Rotary Club President Rob Rubino presented a significant donation to Rotary 7080 District Governor Mike Gauthier allocated to The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve the goals of peace and understanding by supporting humanitarian projects around the world.
Rotarian Romeo Mitchell presented ShelterBox Canada representative Sue Rickets with a notable donation for international disaster relief. ShelterBox was started by a Rotarian in England and has expanded into a global program that delivers relief boxes to disaster victims. Each box contains a tent, water purification, tools, pots and pans and so much more for 10 people.
Two new Paul Harris Fellow Awards were also presented to Sohail Naseer and Rebecca Hunter, one of which is the Mike Ledwith prize for Excellence in Rotary. Each award represents a $1,000 donation to The Rotary International Foundation. These honorees are individuals who meet high professional and personal standards set forth by Paul Harris, the original founder of Rotary. Paul Harris recognition is not limited to Rotarians. A Paul Harris Fellow receives a special certificate and a gold pin. At the discretion of the Fellow's club, the Fellow may also receive a gold medallion on a blue-and-gold ribbon.
Two new members, Jennifer Stebbing and Ken Taylor, were inducted into the Rotary Club of Milton by club president Rob Rubino.
A special presentation recognized the efforts of Milton Rotarian Len Lee, who on May 26, the same night, received the Milton Senior of the Year Award from the Town of Milton.
